University of the Witwatersrand WITS Residence Application

At Wits, our residences are LIVING and LEARNING centres. We offer a wide variety of residence accommodation, ranging from single-gender residences, catering residence, to mixed-gender residences.

Campus Housing and Residence Life, is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the University’s residence programme, including accommodation and meals, and the provision of recreational facilities and programmes for the improved academic performance and the holistic development of students within a residential environment.

Whether you are new to university life or in your final years of study, we have a community for you.

NB:  Applications are done online and not directly with the residences for new students to the university.

How to apply for accommodation in a WITS residence

If you wish to apply for residence, please take note of the following:New Undergraduate students to the University 

  • NB: The closing date for all applications is 30 September each year. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • You are required to pay an application fee of R110.00 (Double room) or R610.00 (Single room). Please note that this payment is non-refundable
  • If you are offered University accommodation, a deposit of R950.00 must be paid as confirmation of your acceptance of a place in residence. This deposit must be paid within the stipulated time after you have been offered a place in residence. All applicants need to pay the deposit regardless of whether or not they have a bursary.
  • Before you are admitted to a residence, you will be required to pay 20% of your residence fees for the year.
  • Bursary students must provide proof of their bursary upon registration.

Students who are presently at Wits, but not residing in residence


  • Applications are done online through self-service. For further inquiries please contact the Central Accommodation Office – located on the Ground Floor, Room SH045, Solomon Mahlangu House.
  • The closing date for undergraduates is 30 September and for postgraduates, 30 October.
  • Upon receiving an offer of a place in residence, pay R950.00 deposit into your student fees account, as confirmation of your acceptance of the place. (If this deposit is not paid within the stipulated time, the offer will be withdrawn)

Students currently residing in a residence

  • Readmission to University accommodation for a subsequent year is not automatic.
  • A student’s academic and disciplinary records are taken into account when readmission applications are considered.
  • Applications for readmission are done online and must be completed by 30 September.
  • Should you wish to apply for a residence different to the one you’re currently occupying, please do so on self-service.

Postgraduate Students (New to Wits)

  • Residence applications are done online.
  • Once you have been offered accommodation, you are required to pay an acceptance deposit of R950 as indicated in the offer letter.
  • The closing date for accommodation applications is 30 October.
