The Swiss Hotel School in Randburg opened its doors in 1995. The curriculum and educational philosophy was modelled on that of the Hotel School Belvoirpark in Zurich where the founder, JüRG Vontobel had been Director for 10 years.

The Swiss Hotel School is registered with the department of Higher Education and Training as a private education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997. Registration certificate No. 2010/HE07/006

Bachelor of Hospitality Management 

This Bachelor of Hospitality Management programme is targeted at individuals who are service-minded, who possess good commercial insights and the potential for entrepreneurship. It is designed for students who want to pursue career paths in top management positions within the hospitality industry. Students will acquire the knowledge needed to lead a financially sound business, develop strong management and communication skills as well as develop sound business strategies for achieving organizational growth. ​

Graduates of a Bachelor of Hospitality Management will gain detailed knowledge of specific management topics – restaurant management, food & beverage management, room division management, and human resources. Also in-depth knowledge of economics, accounting and sales, and marketing applicable to the hospitality business environment.​

Graduates will target different management positions within a wide range of organizations – from more traditional management positions – initially departmental management roles such as Restaurant Manager, Events Coordinator, Banqueting Manager, Front Office Manager and Head Housekeeper to specialist positions such as HR Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager, Food & Beverage Controller and Purchasing Manager. Some will aspire to senior management positions, Hotel General Manager or Regional Manager of a restaurant group but those with a strong element of entrepreneurship will be looking to start up their own enterprise, be it a restaurant, country lodge, catering company, training provider or event Management Company. 

Bachelor of Hospitality Management Programme: Admission

To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Hospitality Management, applicants need to meet the following minimum requirements: need to add in all criteria – chef qualifications and the advanced certificate]​

  • Applicants holding a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a University Degree Endorsement as certified by Umalusi. Applicants holding a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
  • English language at an achievement rating of 4 (50 – 59%) or above.
  • Mathematics at a rating of 4 (50 – 59% ), Mathematical Literacy at 5 (60+)
  • Minimum of 26 APS score with Mathematics and 29 with Mathematical Literacy.

Applicants will be CONDITIONALLY ADMITTED based on their Grade 11 or equivalent results, subject to them meeting all the minimum requirements. FINAL ADMISSION to the programme will depend on the final Grade 12 results.​

Students interested in pursuing the Swiss Hotel School Professional Chef Programme are expected to have achieved a grade 12 pass with an APS score of 25 or more points.

If the applicant’s Senior Certificate was received prior to 2008 or if they completed a different school leaving qualification or if they completed their formal high school qualification at an international institution, a separate arbitration will be made by the Registrar based on this qualification levels of parity with the APS system.

Application Process

Step 1: First and Foremost, all interested candidates are encouraged to attend one of our Open Days. During these Open Days, information will be given on all aspects of the school, its programmes and career opportunities for graduates. Once this document has been completed it should be scanned and uploaded along with the following supporting documentation:

  • ​Copy of Matric Certificate or Latest Matric Results (Grade 11 report will suffice for current Grade 12’s)
  • Testimonials or Work References
  • 1 Recent colour ID Photo
  • Student ID/Passport Copy
  • ID/Passport Copy of Financial Sponsor or Parent/Guardian 
  • A Letter of Commitment from a Financial Sponsor
  • Motivational Letter
  • Copy of the Medical Aid Card
     

Please ensure that the above-mentioned documents are in order prior to completing the Online Application Form. 

Step 3: Once the documents have been received by the school, the school will call you to set up an interview date. When you come for the interview a R400.00 application fee is applicable that must be paid on the day. Please allow around two and a half hours for this interview process.

Step 4: The school will inform you within 5 working days whether your application was successful. If the application was successful, further documentation and an acceptance letter will then be sent to you.

Step 5: To confirm acceptance of the School’s offer you must fill in the acceptance form, make payment of the confirmation deposit and return the necessary documents within 14 days.

2. Professional Chef Programme 

The Professional Chef Programme consists of a series of modules that can be challenged on a one-off basis or as part of a long-term career development process. Chef Students will learn in the classroom, in our purpose-built training kitchens and through work exposure with our long-standing industry partners.

Professional Chef Programme:
Tuition Fees

First-time students will be required to complete an entry assessment and interview. A R400 application and administration fee will cover the assessment costs and is payable on the day of the assessment.

The confirmation deposit is an advance on the tuition fee for new students to activate the registration after successful completion of the entry assessment.  Enrolment for courses thereafter will not require a deposit.

Fees include all the training aids required for the completion of the programme such as uniforms, textbooks and knife set.

Fees for the Higher Certificate Pastry & Bakery Course assume returning students who have completed the Professional Cookery Higher Certificate. Direct entry students into the Pastry and Bakery Higher Certificate will be charged approximately R2000 extra to cover uniforms.

The cost for food products used during practical sessions will be covered in the meal plan.  Students will also benefit by receiving lunch on the days spent on campus.

Secure off road parking is available to students on the campus premises.  The parking fee of R400 per semester will cover the security costs.  Students to purchase remote controls.
