Notice to all applicants for Grade 8 in 2020: Please remember that as well as submitting the RBHS forms plus supporting documents to the school, applicants are requested to complete the WCED online process as well. This will be made available on 15 February 2019 at the following URL:

The closing date for all applications for Grade 8 in 2020 (both directly to RBHS and via WCED online process) is Friday 15 March 2019.

Enrolment into Grade 8
Initial acceptances are confirmed by the end of the second term in the preceding year of entry.
Interviewing takes place in the second term for admission in January of the following year.
While there is no entrance examination, an interview may be necessary.

Fees are set annually by the Board of Governors in consultation with the Headmaster and include an annual escalation fee – reviewed on an annual basis after the school budget requirements have been determined. Fees are approved by a meeting of parents held in November for the following year. A letter from the Chairman of the Governing Body will inform parents of the amount of the annual fee increase and options for payment.

Fee Remissions
As in prior years, parents experiencing financial hardship may apply for an exemption from fees. Applications are made directly with the School’s Business Manager Mr P Coutts – 021 6817929.

The Governing Body has accordingly declared RBHS a fee paying school, which means that the school fees levied are legally enforceable. These fees, which are adjusted from time to time to cover operating costs, are collected by the Schools’ Fund, which administers the moneys for the benefit of the school and in accordance with the directions of the Governing Body.

Music lessons
Music tuition is given at the school in piano, recorder, cello, violin, guitar, clarinet, percussion, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn and keyboard. A fee (depending on instrument learnt) is charged for these lessons which must be submitted, strictly in advance, to the school bursar. Auditions take place annually in November.

NOTE: There is a waiting list for these lessons and pupils who do not make the desired progress in music, may be replaced. Any pupil wishing to terminate music lessons is required to give a full term’s notice.


Development contribution fund
Over the years RBHS has built up an exceptional establishment of sporting and other facilities for the use and benefit of its pupils. Maintaining and improving standards at the school is an enormous financial undertaking in a time of severely curtailed state expenditure. This development fund has been financed by school parents, the Old Boys of the school and other interested persons.


The School offers several scholarships primarily to boys entering RBHS in Grade 8. Some run the full five years of high school; these are awarded according to academic criteria; sporting ability or musical accomplishment. Candidates for certain scholarships will be required to sit an examination during their Grade 7 year.

Academic Scholarship for Grade 8
The writing of the academic scholarship exam for Grade 8 for the year of entry into the High School is written towards the end of the 1st term of the preceding year.
The closing date for Scholarship Examination entries is a week before the examination is written.
Boys are required to write an exam which comprises 3 sections: English, Mathematics and Logic.
Writing the Scholarship Examination does not commit the candidate to attendance at RBHS nor does it guarantee acceptance.

Music Scholarship for Grade 8
Auditions are held early during the second term for boys entering the High School in the following year.
Includes all Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and Keyboard instrumentalists.
The minimum standard required is Grade 4 (practical). Successful candidates must take Music as an academic subject.
Candidates must be prepared to take an active part in the cultural and sporting life of RBHS.
Auditioning for the Music Scholarship does not commit the candidate to attendance at RBHS nor does it guarantee acceptance.

Sports Scholarship for Grade 8
Interviews are held during the second term of the year preceding entry into the High School.
Candidates must play a sport, currently offered at RBHS, at least at a provincial level
(or be of provincial ability).
Candidates must also be prepared to play that sport for RBHS.

Carleton Lloyd Education Trust Full Scholarships
Full Scholarships are offered to boys who are currently in Grade 7 and who excel at rugby and any other school sports.
These Scholarships are in addition to the Sports Scholarships offered by the School.
Scholarships: 1 x Tuition and Boarding and 2 x Tuition only are on offer.

Overseas Scholarship Fund
This fund awards one scholarship annually for post graduate study at a foreign university.

Nan Mears Scholarship
The Nan Mears Scholarship is awarded every three to four years alternately to a former pupil of St Stithians College and a Rondebosch Old Boy.
The Scholarship is for postgraduate study in the humanities, the arts or law at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

“All-rounder” Scholarship
Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School offers the “all-rounder” scholarship to a Grade 7 boy who goes on to Rondebosch Boys’ High School.
