Curro Sitari

Curro Sitari is situated on the beautiful Sitari Country Estate in Somerset West, Cape Town.

We provide an excellent education to learners from 3 months old up to Grade 12. These Curro learners are exposed to a quality learning programme in the fields of academics, sport and culture within which they can grow and develop their own, individual abilities.

Our ethos is governed by Christian values, where learners are encouraged to explore and express their individuality within acceptable boundaries, and ultimately take responsibility for their actions.

We guide them to follow their hearts and minds to develop into the best people they can be.

Our dynamic curriculum covers problem-solving, critical thinking and the development of skills and values. Both individual and group work are evaluated.

Curro Sitari produces a community of teenagers who know how to think innovatively, express their ideas and take charge of their own lives. Learners are prepared for the matriculation examinations set by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

Academics

Foundation phase

Foundation phase: Grade R to Grade 3
In the foundation phase, we focus on teaching the foundational skills, concepts and knowledge which are required for further learning. We offer a vibrant, invitational atmosphere where the learners enjoy coming to school and where they acquire a love for learning, that will sustain them throughout their school years. We acknowledge the potential in each learner to reach optimum ability; therefore, there is less emphasis on competitiveness and more emphasis on individual achievement. We encourage opportunities for growth in independence and responsibility so that learners can take up the challenge of being personally responsible and accountable for their actions in the intermediate phase.

Perceptual development forms an integral part of all learning in the foundation phase, and includes gross motor skills, sensory motor integration, perceptual motor skills and language development. Robotics lessons form part of the curriculum.

Curro Sitari’s alignment with 21st century skills includes:

  • Language and literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Life skills

Language and literacy

Home language (English or Afrikaans) and first additional language (English or Afrikaans)

In the literacy subject, we have incorporated the latest global trend of matching learners to book levels and of teaching guided reading and writing. This develops conceptual understanding at the learners’ own pace. Literacy skills are also taught using structured text types.

Mathematics

The curriculum has been written with a learner-centric, problem-solving approach leading to an individualised, well-developed number concept in young learners. This facilitates the successful learning of Mathematics as an abstract subject from Grade 4 to Grade 12.

Life Skills

We have added Robotics and Science to this subject as it involves design and a deep level of cognition, which underpins the learners’ creativity in using software to program their Lego educational toys. Collaboration is encouraged by allowing learners to work in pairs.

Intermediate phase

Grade 4 to Grade 7
In the intersen phase the emphasis is still on establishing basic foundations, but learners are led into more abstract thinking and independent work. The application of skills and concepts is also a focus point, aiming to prepare learners for the senior phase in the high school.

We aim to embrace 21st century learning by incorporating tablets into our classrooms. We currently raise children who are ‘digital natives’. By embracing this innovative technology in our school we are speaking the language our learners understand.

Curriculum
In this phase the CAPS curriculum is implemented, with Mathematics allowing for a more focused and problem-solving approach. The same literacy principles as in previous phases are included in the home language teaching, with a bigger emphasis on language. In the Science and Technology curriculum we focus not only on 21st century technology, but also on nanotechnology and a study of the Da Vinci inventions. This is all done with CAPS and the IEB in mind.

  • English or Afrikaans home language
  • English or Afrikaans first additional language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Technology
  • Economic and Management Sciences (including Accounting)

FET phase: Grade 10 to Grade 12

In the FET phase, learners make their subject choices. Curro offers learners a wide selection of subjects, enabling them to pursue these further for their chosen careers. Learners are thoroughly informed, enabling them to make wise choices, and are encouraged to include Mathematics and Science. In the FET phase emphasis is placed on thorough preparation for the IEB matric examination.

Curriculum
We are very aware that, at the end of their school careers, learners need to excel in their matric examination to ensure access to tertiary education institutions and selection for their areas of study. Although we take Grade 10 to Grade 12 very seriously, we realise that a purely examination-driven approach is not the answer. Curro has developed an additional inter-Curro subject-head system to ensure that we have quality assurance across schools. This system extends well beyond examinations and question banks, enabling educators to share resources, teaching ideas and material that can be used on tablets to enhance learning and the development of 21st century skills.

Subject choice must include:

  • English or Afrikaans home language
  • English or Afrikaans first additional language
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation

Three additional subjects which could include:

  • Physical Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Business Studies
  • Computer Applications Technology (CAT)
  • Accounting
  • Geography
